UDO
Hva tenker du når du hører ordet “dominator” i dag? Noen vil helt sikkert tenke på en person med sterk vilje og som står på sitt uansett…? Og på en måte kunne dette være en passende signatur for Udo Dirkschneider, tidligere vokalist i det tyske pionermetalbandet Accept, nå en de største vokalistene og låtskriverne av sin generasjon med bandet UDO.
Med album som Breaker, Restless and Wild, Balls to he Wall, Metal Heart og Russian Roulette var det ikke rart om Accept etter hvert ble å regne med innen seriøs metal. Men like etter utgivelsen av Russian Roulette ble ting annerledes da Udo og Accept gikk hver sin vei. Den karismatiske sangeren Dirkschneider dannet U.D.O. for å fortsette innen tradisjonell metal, mens Accept forandret seg til et mer kommersielt prosjekt med ny vokalist. U.D.O. produserte album som Animal House (1987), Mean Machine, Faceless World og Timebomb, og opplevde at fanskaren stadig vokste. Udo takket nei til en gjenforening med Accept i 1992, og fortsatte heller med U.D.O. med utgivelser som Solid i 1997, Holy, Live in Russia i 2001 samt Man and Machine.
Kort tid etter at han signerte med AFM i 2004 kom albumet Nailed To Metal, det kritikerroste Thunderball og Mission No. X, men i 2007 kom utgivelsen av det som av mange regnes som det beste U.D.O.-albumet til dags dato. Mastercutor markerte i følge både fans og presse en fornyelse av bandet. Selv om det fremdeles var klassisk heavy metal, viste albumet en ny side av U.D.O. Denne bravuren viste seg berettiget da albumet havnet som nr. 34 på de tyske topplistene, ikke bare som et bevis på bandmedlemmenes klasse og udødelighet, men som en anerkjennelse av mer en 20 år med U.D.O.-historie; den beste plasseringen bandet har fått så langt. Live-albumet lot ikke vente på seg.
Men tilbake til dags dato, for det er på tide med det neste tilskuddet. På tide å annonsere ankomsten til albumet Dominator. Et må-ha for enhver heavy metal-fan, og det neste logiske steg i metalsjefens karriere.
På Dominator viser UDO fremdeles den karismatiske heavy metal-sounden som har gjort ham berømt. Albumet oppsummerer perfekt det han står for, og hva Accept stod for. Med moderne uttrykk finnes det utdrag fra alle episoder av Udos velillustrerte karriere: de klassiske riffene og karismatiske refrengene som slår gnister tilbake til Accept (Black and White), de mer episke/orkestrale undertonene fra Faceless World (1990), og de rett fram, in-your-face gromlåtene Dominator og The Bogeyman som blandes elegant med balladen Whispers In The Dark.
Dominator er også produsert, mikset og mastret av Udos gamle Accept-kompis Stefan Kaufmann, gitarist i bandet nesten like lenge som mannen selv har sunget i det, så: vær forberedt på en fin konsertopplevelse!
